The Spas of Braies Vecchia and Braies Nuova

Inseparable from the valley are its spas. How far back their history last, we will never know. In any case in the year 1490 a simple, energetic timber servant and sub forester, asked for permission from Gorizia, to construct on the so-called deer wells of Braies, buildings in order to feed suffering and sick people. The request was granted to him, even a year later the Countess Paula of Gorizia have visited this source. Miracles way she was healed from martyrdom of limbs. There were also other widespread diseases, which especially in this time led to an upsurge of the baths. The bath in the series seems much to have been visited. In the year 1501 Emperor Maximilian I gave extensive powers over this feud bath. This bath should be an oasis of peace and healing, which also happend. The water had a great power to warm, to unify, to heal,..., it deprives them of the usually unnecessary sweat, it alleviates the pain of evil illness, heals wounds and helps against bone fractures. The water promised more than ever wonderful qualities to bear in itself.
The Spa of Braies Vecchia was in the following centuries, much vaunted and praised.

 

 

In addition to the actual bath spring, the "deer fountain", there were the "eyes source" and the "source of drinking water". With 9° Celsius temperature the water bubbling from the rocks. In the year 1692 was build even a chapel, which evolved over time a large number of crutches accumulates, which of the miraculous manner cured patients had been left behind. The Spa of Braies Vecchia counted from 1830 to 1870 constant 600 to 1,000 bathers. Peculiarly changed owners over the years in rapid sequence. Therefore, the quality of the services are not always compatible with the requirements of the guests to keep up. So towards the end of the 19th Century, the glorious time of the bath gradually Braies Vecchia came to its end. It was ousted by newer structures, by the Spa of Braies Nuova and the hotel "Pragser Wildsee". In 1950 was finally concluded. It disintegrated rapidly.
Otherwise it was at the Spa of Braies Nuova. When the sources were tapped for the first time, just lost in the mists of history, is occupied by the year 1690. As "Erlachbad" it drew from 1830 with his sources "Theresa" and "Jenny" guests from far and near, came to the salutary pleasure. Here, too, helped the water for many suffering: the farmers believed that their eyes suffering were healed, it helped in all sorts of old and new open damages and wounds an it was good for many other little suffering. Later it became known as "Möselbad". Additions emerged, new rooms and bath cabins. The food was excellent, the 400 guests rose each year from a week and spent long stays in the middle of the woods, lake and the pure air.

The Spas of Braies always expressed the spirit of the time. Their career, their fame, their demise was typical, not only for them but for many others in the Alps. The first deathblow transferees them the First World War. After this, in 1936, also the former owner of the industrious new fascist rulers cede the bath, until the Catholic Church adopted as fitting under summer accomodation.
