Churches and chapels in Braies Valley
Few hundred years ago were built chapels in nearly every village, also if the village was made of a few houses. So in our small valley you can find 8 chapels and two churches.
The Chapel at the Lake Braies
The Chapel at the Lake Braies was built in the first years of the 20th Century and was consecrated in 1904. A lot of famous people have visited the chapel, for example the Archduke Franz Ferdinand with his wife. During the hostage crisis, the chapel served as a place of refuge for the crowded prisoners: Adolf Hitler ordered the transfer of prominent political prisoners from the Dachau Concentration Camp to the Lago di Braies. 136 political prisoners who were of special importance to the Nazis were to be executed here. Among the prisoners were the Stauffenberg family, Prince Leopold of Prussia, the Suffragan Bishop Johannes Neuhäuser, Fritz Thyssen, Winston Churchill's nephew, and many more. On May 1st, 1945 the political prisoners were liberated and 4 days later American troops took charge of the prisoners. Shortly afterwards they were flown to Sicily from where they returned home.
Parish church San Vito
The first documented consecration in San Vito was in 1335. Only in 1704 they had a priest and in 1891 San Vito was raise to parish. The church has an abundant structured vault and and a neo-Gothic high altar. Outside, on the southern wall is a sundial and a marble plaque where all the deceased priests of San Vito are named.
The church of the martyred saviour in Ferrara di Braies
The church was built in 1735 on the foundations of a chapel. It became famous for beautiful frescos found during the restoration in 1981. Very impressive is the pulpit with its ornaments, the processional cross and the statues of Saint Nikolaus and Saint Florian.
