The beginning of the Grand Hotel in Dobbiaco
Everything began in 1871 with the construction of the railroad from Lienz to Fortezza by the Austrian-Hungarian Southern Railway Company, after the initial years of construction the business expectations had not been met. Hence, the owners concentrated on the future market of tourism. In summer of 1878 the hotel was opened. From then on, European aristocracy and the rich spent their summer in the Grand Hotel. The then called "Southern Railway Hotel" provided the basis for the touristic development of Dobbiaco, and the hotel was continuously expanded thanks to generous investments.
Varied development of the Grand Hotel in Dobbiaco
During World War I the Grand Hotel suffered only minor damage, and was converted into a base hospital. By the end of the War the hotel was in a dire condition, and had very few guests. In 1934 the Grand Hotel was put up for auction, and the Venezia Tridentina credit institution took over. Due to the ensuing economic growth, the Italians discovered Dobbiaco as an Alpine Mecca for their summer holidays. The Grand Hotel was passed over to the State, and in 1991 the South Tyrolean Government started with renovation works, and the construction of today's Grand Hotel Culture Centre.
