Dobbiaco: cultural variety and tradition
Artists and poets have always been attracted by charming landscapes like the one surrounding the Three Peaks. No wonder so many artists felt at home in Alta Pusteria. For this reason, the region features many historic monuments and artistic sites: prehistoric cultural sites and works of art dating back to Romanesque, Gothic and late Baroque or the Belle Époque.

Culture at Dobbiaco
Ancient buildings and noble art are closely connected to the history and the development of Alta Pusteria. The Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist is one of the most important Baroque buildings in the Puster valley. And famous artists like Gustav Mahler, Rudolf Schraffl and Sebastian Baur have left their marks. Not to forget the "Red Tower" (Hornberger Tower - 1430). The tower received the name thanks to his red coat of paint.
The Grand Hotel
South of the train station was builded the K. & K. Grand Hotel at the turn of the century. In the heydays the hotel was meeting point of the european nobility. Tourism and contemporary history was wirtten here. After 1999 the Grand Hotel became the culture and congress center in the historical ambiance.
Churches and chappels
Dobbiaco is high in churches and chappels, which are situated at and around Dobbiaco, like the parish church, the pilgrimage church of Santa Maria and also the 5 passion-chappels along the oldest stations of the Cross of Tyrol.

Gustav Mahler, Sebastian Baur and emperor Maximilian I.
Two great composers acted at Dobbiaco: Gustav Mahler spent 3 summers at Dobbiaco and composed here the "Lied von der Erde" and the" 9th Symphony".
Sebastian Baur acted all his life at Dobbiaco. Her was composer, organist and choir director, as well bandmaster of the village band of Dobbiaco.
Emperor Maximilan I. spent 2 years at the Herbst Castle at Dobbiaco during his war against Venice.
Traditions and costums in the Alta Pusteria valley
Dobbiaco and the Alta Pusteria valley are still living the tradition of the past centuries. A lot of feast are celebrated. Also the traditional costumes, village bands and the riflemen called "Schützen" are still verry important for the villages of the Alta Pusteria.
The history of Dobbiaco
The settlement of Dobbiaco began during the Hallstatt period. With the development of the railway in 1871, Dobbiaco became more important for the tourism.
