San Candido: varied history and tradition

header_stiftskirche_02.jpg

The community of San Candido comprises the main town Innichen and the harbours Versciaco, Prato Drava and Monte San Candido, which were independent communities until 1929. The main village San Candido is located in the source area of the Drava river (1,175 m).

San Candido looks back upon historic development from the time of the Illyrians up to today. The foundation of the settlement and the Benedictine Monastery was implemented by Duke Tassilo from Bavaria in 769. In 816 the convent was passed on to the Freising Monastery. In 1142 it was converted to an abbey. From 1549 San Candido was subordinate to the bishops of Bressanone; later on, the provosts were appointed by the Emperor in Vienna.

Urban San Candido: historic buildings and art

Ancient buildings and noble art are closely connected to the history of San Candido and the development of Alta Pusteria. The Collegiate Church of S. Candidus and Korbinian is a Roman construction dating back to the 13th century. The church has an imposing tower, a crypt dating back to the 10th century, and a fresco by M. Pacher.
