Mountain hikes around Sexten / Sesto
The valley is renowned for its bizarre mountain world and for the fantastic, indescribable panoramic views. The impressions you get during your hikes will take you into a swirl and you will never forget them.
Hiking trails
Moos - Knieberg
Walking time: 5 ½ hours
Difference in altitude: 1,200 m
Forest and pasture paths with a steep incline during the last hour.
From the Alpe-Nemes Hut on a gently ascending forest path in an easterly direction to the valley basin. Then, the path leads up to the transient Kniebergriedl with several serpentines. From there, a path leads to the peak via the south-eastern ridge. During the last section you can admire remains from World War I. The pyramid-like mountain, which is in front of our eyes during the entire hike, offers a wide view of the Popera Mountain Group and the Dolomites of Sexten.
Moos - Ridge Hike - Helm
Walking time: 8 hours
Sign-posts: No. 146, No. 160, No. 402;
very long hike, fantastic from a landscape point of view.
From Kniebergriedl (see description above) up steep serpentines to the flat Obstanser Sattel with the ruins of a finance police station; fantastic view of the Obstanser Lake with a hut of the same name. This is where the actual alpine path begins. The path leads along the ridge, whereby flatter peaks are surpassed directly. A hiking path leads along the Austrian side, as well as along the Italian side of the ridge. White boundary stones mark the border line. After about 4 hours (from the police station) you reach the Sillian Hut.
From here you walk around the Füllhorn Mountain to the Helm on a good path. During the entire hike you enjoy a beautiful view of the Puster Valley and the upper Comelico, the Dolomites and the Central Alps. At several spots you can still find remains of position buildings from World War I.
Those who do not want to climb the Helm Mountain take the wide path in a westerly direction leading through the pastures and meeting the path, which leads from Helm to Negerdorf and further on to Sesto. There is also a possibility of taking the wide path via the Hahnspiel Hut to the Helm Restaurant, from where you can descend with the cable cars.
Those who want to reduce this long hike and avoid most of the ascent can go up with the cable car and hike this route in the opposite direction.
