The development of Villabassa...

Villabassa has had a long and varied history. The name "Nidrindorf" was mentioned in documents in 994, the village was first mentioned as a parish in 1225.

Even 150 years ago, Villabassa and Alta Pusteria were one of the pioneer regions of Tyrolean tourism. The village was located amidst a forest landscape with numerous thermal springs in the surroundings. The village was located at the entry to the awe-inspiring beauty of the Sesto and Braies Dolomites, which were discovered by brave alpinists in 1869. The beautiful landscape provided inspiration for painters and musicians, a meeting point for celebrities from monarchies.

Since 1871 Villabassa can be easily reached via the Southern Railway line; Vienna and Munich can be reached within a few hours by train.

Villabassa was a pioneer in tourism

At the middle of the 19th century, Villabassa became more and more popular as a summer holiday destination. Emmerentia Hellenstainer, nèe Hausbacher from St. Johann in Tyrol, known as Miss Emma (1817-1904) was famous beyond her homeland and she took a lot of credit for the work to promote tourism in the area.  As the landlady of the "Schwarzadler" hotel - now Hotel Emma - she was well-known for her hospitality and excellent cooking skills.

Villabassa was one of the few post stations in the Puster Valley, however unlike the others it was of particular significance. The post office here was entrusted with more letters than elsewhere because Villabassa was an important trading centre.  The first postmaster was "Johannes von Kurz". He lived in today's House Wassermann, where the Alta Pusteria Tourism Museum is located.

Under the Earls of Görz and Tyrol, Villabassa also had a court.
