The community of San Candido comprises the main town San Candido and the harbours Versciaco, Prato Drava and Monte San Candido, which were independent communities until 1929. San Candido has approx. 3,150 inhabitants, 83% of which are Germans, 16% Italians, and 1% Ladins. San Candido is located at the source of the Drava River. The lower course of the river makes up national borders and borders between populations. In the Puster Valley it is only a small river. The source of the Drava River is located three kilometres west of San Candido, in the Dobbiaco Meadow.
