Great success of the choirs in Alta Pusteria
The Alta Pusteria International Choir Festival has continuously grown over the last editions: since 1998, 465 choirs and more than 18,000 singers have participated at the festival. The variety of venues and the comprehensive repertoire make the festival a very special choir event. The international fame can be seen through the participation of choirs from China, Cyprus, South Africa and Norway. Also choirs from Bulgaria, Estonia, Israel, Lithuania, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Turkey, Hungary, and all twenty Italian regions participate.
One of the most impressive moments for participants and guests is the parade of the choirs on Saturday: 4,000 singers with the most varied costumes march through the pedestrian zone in San Candido and sing together on the Piazza del Magistrato square afterwards. Frisky singing and an informal exchange of experiences is planned for the Tyrolean Festival in Villabassa. The farewell celebration with final ceremony is a fixed event in Sesto on Sunday.
Alta Pusteria International Choir Festival
The Choir Festival takes place every summer in the second half of June. 90 choirs participate in the various villages in Alta Pusteria. Folks songs, mountaineer songs, spirituals or opera songs are presented during this major international event.
Entry is free, and you can visit up to 70 concerts in culture buildings, churches, castles, huts or even outdoors. Concerts with the most varied types of music take place in Sesto, San Candido, Dobbiaco, Villabassa, Braies, Monguelfo, Rasun, Anterselva, Valdaora, Brunico, and in the neighbouring village of Sillian in Austria.
Stefano Gentili from Rome is responsible for the artistic management of this major event. He studied music at the academy of music in Santa Cecilia. He qualified in choir music and choir and orchestra management. Gentili wrote numerous musical works for choirs, and he edited many folklore and classical pieces. Since 1991 he has been the choir master of "Canticorum Jubilo" at all national and international tours. Gentili is also the instructor and leader of the boy's choir "Villa Flaminia", which participated at numerous music events.
