Churches and Chapels in Villabassa

The Parish Church with Anna Chapel and Chapel of the Deceased

The Parish Church is devoted to S. Stefano. It is a late Baroque building dating back to 1792-96. The church contains frescoes by Franz Altmutter, sculptures by Nißl, and an altar picture by Martin Knoller, a student of the Baroque painter Paul Troger. The high altar and both side altars are simple and strict pillar constructions. To the left of the church stairs you can see a Gothic twofold chapel dating back to the 15th century. The lower part serves as Chapel of the Deceased, the upper part is the Anna Chapel. To the front of the Chapel of the Deceased you can admire a fresco by Simon von Taisten. The Anna Chapel has a regular star vault with round end stones. This twofold chapel is one of the oldest buildings in the entire Puster Valley.
Opening times of the Parish Church and the Chapel of the Deceased: daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Masses and silent prayers: Information in the Tourism Association, 0474 745136.

Holy Trinity Hospital Church

At the same time of the foundation of the hospital in 1456, a chapel was also constructed (1456-73). At the middle of the 17th century the chapel was extended to today's church. On the 30th of January 1655, the Hospital Church was consecrated by Bishop Jesse Perkhofer from Bressanone. The church and the former hospital are connected by an entry hall with groin vault. The Hospital Church is furnished in Baroque style.
Visiting times: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

S. Magdalene's Church in Moso

Today's S. Magdalene's Church dates back to 1490 to a donation by Countess Paula von Gonzaga, wife of Margrave Leonhard von Görz. The early Baroque high altar dates back to around 1600. A relief plaque depicting the Adoration of the Magi, a work by Michael Parth from the late Gothic period (around 1520), decorates the high altar. The church is located somewhat outside the village in the direction of Monguelfo.
Visiting times: Start of April - end of September, SUN 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Chapels in Villabassa

A typical feature of the settlements scattered over the Monte Costa area became the numerous chapels which were constructed in the harbours and on individual farms mostly in the 18th century.  The locals call them "Stöckl" at least at the Monte Costa. Hence, there you can find a "Ringler Stöckl", constructed around 1780; the "Gruber Stöckl", after which the Gruber (burned down around 1820) farm was named; the "Thaler Stöckl" in today's shape dating back to 1768, and the "Sinner Stöckl". The Pian di Maia Chapel near Bagni di Pian di Maia is open in July and August from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
